Give Your Landlord Notice
Everything with your new home purchase is proceeding as planned. If you are currently renting or leasing, now is the time to give your landlord notice that you intend to move. If you have a month-to-month rental agreement, by California law you are required to provide 30 days written notice unless specified differently in your rental agreement. If you are leasing, you need to provide written notice for a minimum of 60 days before the end of your lease.
When writing your notice of intent to move, be sure to do the following:
- Date the letter
- Mention the date you plan to move
- Mention the rental property address
- Sign the letter
- Deliver the notice to the landlord or property manager in person or send via certified mail and request a receipt of delivery
- Keep a copy for your records
If you have a lease agreement that will not end before you move, you have a couple of options:
- We can potentially push back the closing date to coincide with the end of your lease. If you’d like to do this, it is best to let us know this prior to drafting the initial purchase agreement.
- If your leasing agreement allows, you may be able to sublease your current place of residence for the remaining duration of your lease.
- You can continue your lease, which will allow you to move into your new home at your leisure. Just remember, if you choose this option, you will have both a monthly rental payment and a monthly mortgage payment.

To avoid any issues, be sure you understand what your landlord requires upon move out, including cleaning, the signing of any documentation and how soon you can expect to receive a refund your security deposit, if applicable.
Once you’ve given notice, it’s time to start planning your big move!
