Moving with Pets

Now is also the time to begin planning on how you will make the move as easy as possible for your pets.

We discussed this previously as it related to the preparation stage of selling your home, but now is the time to begin making formal arrangements since your move date is imminent.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Pack all of your pet’s things in labeled boxes so you can easily locate and unpack upon your arrival in your new residence.
• Update your pet’s tag if it will have outdated information once you move; if your pet has an embedded “chip,” its information will need to be updated as well (usually through your vet or possibly online)
• Get your pet’s records from the vet if you’ll be moving out of the area
• Keep a week’s worth of food and medication on hand for each pet in case of emergency
• Have a first aid kit available
• Ensure your pets are secure in the car during the move, either in a crate or by using a restraint harness
• If you’ll be traveling by plane to your new home, check with the airline in advance on pet restrictions
• Before you move, find a new veterinarian in your new city or town, if applicable
• During moving day, keep your animals away from the chaos to minimize their anxiety and keep them safe
• Make your new home welcoming for pets immediately on arrival by immediately putting out their toys and bedding
• Find out any local concerns that would affect pets in your new neighborhood
• Seek out dog parks, trails and other areas for your pets to enjoy

Once you’ve scheduled the movers and are beginning the packing process and have plans for your pets established, it’s time to cancel, set up or transfer your utilities and homeowner’s insurance.
