Renown Restaurant Nobu Opening in Palo Alto?

The acclaimed Nobu restaurant named after its founder and chef, Nobuyuki Matshuhisa, will soon open it’s first location in the Bay Area. Palo Alto is thought to be its chosen destination for the eatery renown for its distinct Japanese cuisine though a specific locale has yet to be officially confirmed.

Born in Japan, Nobuyuki ‘Nobu’ Matshuhisa began working in the restaurant business after high school. As a result of an invitation to open his own restaurant in Peru, in 1973, Nobu moved to Lima and launched Matsue with a partner. It was there he developed his distinctive style of cuisine that infused Peruvian ingredients into classic Japanese dishes.

In 1987, Chef Nobu opened his first U.S.-based restaurant, Matsuhisa, in Beverly Hills. It quickly became a Hollywood celebrity hotspot. A Nobu regular, Robert De Niro invited Chef Nobu to open another restaurant in New York’s Tribeca borough. As such, the first Nobu restaurant was launched as a partnership between the two friends.

In addition to a Japanese-South America flair in his signature dishes, Chef Nobu strives to give his customers ‘little surprises that will lead them to make discoveries about their own latent tastes.’ He communicates his kokoro (or heart) in every single dish he makes. This has served him and his customers well.

The Nobu empire includes 32 restaurants and assortment of hotels worldwide. Palo Alto will join an esteemed collection of cities that can boast the most recognized and innovative Japanese eatery. These destinations include Dubai, London, Milan, Tokyo, Budapest, New York and Waikiki. In the United States, there are a total of 14 locations in such key cities as Aspen, Vail, Malibu, Las Vegas and Miami Beach. Nobu Four Season Doha in Qatar is the largest location.

Nobu’s global fan following have long speculated on when and where his namesake restaurant would open in the Silicon Valley. Though unconfirmed, a potential location may be Larry Ellison’s recently acquired Joie de Vivre Epiphany Hotel in downtown Palo Alto. Wherever the Palo Alto Nobu lands, it will likely appeal to those looking for a unique, luxury dining experience.
