Redwood City Fox Theatre

One of the Silicon Valley’s premiere entertainment venues, the Fox Theatre in Redwood City offers a unique line up of plays, musicals, concerts and movies. Set in the heart of downtown Redwood City, the iconic theatre is surrounded by some of the best restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops, making it an ideal location for an afternoon out or a night on the town.

Moved by the architectural designs of Europe, Ellis John Arkursh created the Fox Theatre using two distinct styles. The Moorish influence bedecked its elaborate interior while the exterior reflected a medieval Gothic inspiration. The theatre opened its doors in January 1929 as the New Sequoia Theatre but only 4 months later, was bought by the Fox West Coast Chain. With two screens, one seating 1,300 and the other 240 people, the theatre primarily was used to show motion pictures until after its remodel in 1950, when it became a favorite setting for performers such as Neil Young, BB King, Melissa Etheridge and others.

Thanks to the economic downturn in 2009, the theatre went dark but was brought back to life a year later by San Mateo music promoter, Eric Lochtefeld. Lochtefeld and his wife, Lori, bought the theatre and reimagined its use as one that would include entertainment of all types. The couple has remodeled the theatre while maintaining its distinctive historic architecture and ambiance. The Lochtefelds opened the theatre to over 100 public and private events annually, drawing in well over 100,000 patrons to enjoy the concerts, live shows, plays and musicals. The couple also opened ClubFox, a small venue at 2209 Broadway with state-of-the-art sound and a dance floor, perfect for those looking for live music of all types.

Located at 2215 Broadway Street in Redwood City, the Fox Theatre has a complete list of upcoming events online. You can purchase tickets on their website or at the theatre box office.
