Luxury Home Trend: The Dressing Room
Driven by the premiere of Sex & the City in 2008 and Carrie Bradshaw’s voluminous closet, the rise of the luxury ‘dressing room’ has grown as a luxury trend over the past 10 to 15 years. Once a relatively small space to store clothing and shoes, the closet has transformed into a social enclave that includes an endless variety of high-end amenities and square footage rivaling that of a home’s primary living spaces. The dressing room is a luxury home trend being incorporated into homes around the Silicon Valley, from single family homes in Mountain View to custom manors in Los Altos.
With features that include sound systems, televisions, wine and coffee bars as well as seating areas, the trend of the closet has become one that focuses on more of a boutique feel. Statement lighting, custom cabinetry and cathedral or vaulted ceilings have metamorphosed the once drab closet into a multifunctional adult social living space. Just as with luxury bathrooms, many couples are also creating ‘his and hers’ dressing rooms to meet their individual needs and tastes. Women desire a dressing room that has the ambiance of their favorite designer clothing store with stunningly lit displays of jewelry, shoes, handbags and sunglasses. For men, the closet has become the cutting-edge version of the man cave, with wet bars, office nooks, state-of-the-art electronics and gadgets, and leather couches for watching favorite sporting events.
In high demand, many new homes are being designed around the dressing room to maximize natural light and take advantage of views. Fitness areas and sitting rooms are often adjacent to these Master closets, allowing homeowners to move easily among spaces that are often used together.
The cost of a top-of-the-line dressing room can surpass that of a kitchen, with many possessing refrigerators and wet bars as well as sinks and breakfast nooks. A designer closet can range from $50,000 to upwards of $250,000 or more depending upon the square footage, materials and amenities.
Gone are the days of the basic walk-in Master closet. In their place have blossomed dressing rooms offering an adult retreat overflowing with custom conveniences, ‘trophy displays’ and luxurious social spaces.
