What Is It Like to Live in Capitola, CA | Capitola Living Guide
Ranked by Sunset magazine as one of the best beach towns, Capitola is a beautiful destination for people looking to enjoy the California sun and the Pacific Ocean. Even though it started as a resort town, Capitola’s growing population of 10,000 is a testament that it’s so much more than just a vacation spot.
Located right on the water, about 35 miles southwest of San Jose, Capitola real estate combines all the quaint charms of a small seaside town and all the entertainment and amenities of a larger city.
Here are a few of the best ways to enjoy what Capitola has to offer.
The Beach
One of the driving factors behind Capitola’s reputation is the beautiful, wide beach that hosts a great view of Monterey Bay and Soquel Creek. The area is also known to be a great surf spot, although boogie boarders and paddle boarders are welcome too!
Esplanade Park along the beach is filled with benches or beach-goers can sit along the sea wall which is covered by colorful, community-made decorative tiles.
The Capitola Wharf is also a great place to do some fishing, and keep an eye out for flowers on the railing of the wharf left by other visitors.
The Village
Capitola Village is a perfectly quaint beach-front village filled with mediterranean style buildings painted in vibrant colors. The village area can meet all your shopping needs, from stores for beach supplies, to boutiques, art galleries, jewelry stores, restaurants, and more.
While walking around downtown you’re likely to hear music coming from Esplanade Park and spilling onto the beach. Just across the creek from the Village, there are several parks and a public library in case you’re looking for something quieter.
Culture
For a long time, Capitola was home to the Begonia Festival, which had flower-covered floats and a sandcastle contest. The tradition is now continued with the Capitola Beach Festival in September.
Another Capitola tradition is the Capitola Art and Wine Festival. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the work of over 100 artists while trying wines from Santa Cruz wineries. Live music and dance are performed throughout the weekend.
