Home For A Home
The Dawn Thomas Team has been participating in the nonprofit Home For A Home project since 2014 and to date, has funded the construction of three homes for in-need families in Guatemala. As a Home For A Home affiliate, Dawn donates a portion of her professional fees when her client buys a home in Menlo Park or any of the other eight target communities she serves.
The latest home funded by The Dawn Thomas Team was built for the Ajuchan Raxon family, who, on their limited income, were unable to afford a solid, secure home. 48-year-old Rufino and his wife, Maria, have 8 children ranging in age from 20 to 4 years. Rufino and his two eldest sons work in the fields, earning the equivalent of $46 US dollars a week. When there is no fieldwork, they harvest beans and corn to feed their family. Rufino and his family had been living in a small shack with corrugated metal walls. Their kitchen had cornstalk walls, a dirt floor and a small fire pit for cooking. Constructed in the town of Santo Domingo el Rosario, El Tejar Chimaltenango in Guatemala, the Ajuchan Raxon’s new home is 13’ X 19’ and made of reinforced concrete block. It has a cement floor, metal roof, a lockable metal door and metal framed, glass windows. Each home costs approximately $2,200 apiece to build.
Most families like the Ajuchan Raxons have never owned a home let alone had a house with a door that can be secured with a lock. Each shelter is finished with stucco then painted inside and out with colors chosen by the new owners. Once the homes are completed, there is a ceremony in which each family receives the keys to their new house and a plaque explaining who provided their new, safe dwelling.
Home For A Home is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded by Nick Cooper, who, during high school, travelled to Mexico’s underprivileged boroughs every spring to help build homes. After starting his real estate career, Nick conceived the idea of using sustainable revenue from real estate sales to support construction of homes in the poorest areas of Mexico and Guatemala. With the innovative know-how of fellow co-founders Chris Cheng and Joey Schultz, this concept became a reality.
