Recognized as an industry leader and authority in residential real estate, Dawn Thomas is a firm believer in investing in continuing education and obtaining value-add credentials. Dawn’s most recent accreditation is that of Certified Divorce Real Estate Expert (CDRE). As a Certified Divorce Real Estate Expert and member of the Divorce Real Estate Institute (DREI) with almost three decades of negotiation and hundreds of Silicon Valley families served in real estate transactions, Dawn is uniquely equipped to handle the sale of real property in Silicon Valley Family Law cases.
As stated on their website, the mission of the DREI is to fundamentally transform the collaboration of real estate and family law professionals, such that every divorcing couple is ensured the best possible outcome when untangling the legal, financial, and emotional ties to their house. This undertaking is achieved through the Certified Divorce Real Estate Expert (CDRE) credential program.
The CDRE process is a rigorous one. The application and interview process is demanding, ultimately accepting only the top 5% of REALTORS® into the program. Those chosen for the year-long intensive course are REALTORS® who have a desire to serve divorcing couples by bridging the gap between family law and real estate.
Taught by family law professionals, judges, and attorneys, the CDRE program provides in-depth knowledge to effectively navigate the complexities of selling a divorce listing.
Dawn’s comprehensive master-level CDRE education includes the following:
- Family law legal process
- Neutrality
- Bias and communication
- Ethics
- Divorce listing process and management
- Divorce lending guidelines
Dawn is only one of a very select few in Silicon Valley who can navigate the challenges encountered in divorce listings. These include:
- Sabotage of the sale
- Waste of an asset
- Restraining orders
- One party listed on property title
As a Certified Divorce Real Estate Expert, Dawn is held to a much stricter Code of Ethics than most Realtors®. This ensures she remains an impartial third party working on behalf of the divorcing couple. Dawn’s sole purpose is to neutralize any issues while selling the property as quickly as possible for the highest and best price. Having attended the esteemed Program on Negotiation (PON) at Harvard Law School, Dawn holds a certificate from the Harvard Negotiation Institute, giving her yet another distinct advantage in divorce situations.
For Family Law Attorneys
Whether collaborated, mediated, or litigated, it is my goal to assist in reducing the complexity of the real estate aspect of your divorce cases. I want to help bridge the disconnect between the family law profession and the real estate community in the Silicon Valley.
According to Laurel Starks, Founder of the Divorce Real Estate Institute, “Specialists and experts are not foreign to family law. In fact, every other aspect of the case is served by a family law expert: child custody, business valuations and cash flow analysis, pension division, and family law attorneys themselves specialize in the niche. The one area where there is a general practitioner is in handling the real estate aspect – which is often the largest, most complex asset in the case.”
