Another New Los Gatos Eatery Opens
A new Los Gatos eatery, Asa South opened a few months ago. The location was previously the home of Grill 57 until it shut its doors in March 2019. Asa is owned and operated by restaurateur, Andrew Welch, who resides nearby. Welch is also the proprietor of The Basin in Saratoga as well as Asa North in Los Altos.
“An American restaurant house with an emphasis on family, Asa specializes in combining seasonal, locally grown produce with wild-caught seafood, and sustainably sources hormone-and-chemical-free beef, poultry, and swine. Our Northern California offerings are strongly influenced from generations-old Spanish and Italian cuisines. We strive to create and exceptional experience of epicureanism, gracious and informed service, and a beautiful setting to enrich the lives of our guests,” claims the restaurant’s Yelp page and website.
Named after Welch’s young son, Asa South underwent some remodeling to transform the chic contemporary space located just a stone’s throw from downtown’s North Santa Cruz Avenue. Open daily for dinner at 5pm, and breakfast and lunch on weekdays, Asa’s menu is replete with creative epicurean cuisine by Chef Marcelino Hernandez while Managing Partner and Director of spirits, Sara Scroggins, crafts cocktails sure to delight.
Paella, freshly shucked oysters and truffle fries grace the starter list. Liberty duck served with crispy polenta and rhubarb compote, Argentine steak with silky mash and, for the plant-based foodie, roasted leek marrow and Peruvian beans are among the favorites on the dinner menu. The seafood plates are plentiful and sourced fresh daily and the wine and beer menus are carefully curated. Their breakfast and lunch menus are equally as mouthwatering, with seafood dishes, quiche, soups and salads.
The overall consensus is enthusiastic, with many diners having frequented Welch’s Los Altos location or The Basin in Saratoga.
