Lunch and Art for a Cause.   The Allied Arts Guild has been a peninsula landmark since its founding in 1929.  Tucked away in a residential section of southern Menlo Park – the Guild has long been a favorite destination for its lovely gardens, artists in residence, and the causes it supports.  The complex is owned and operated by the Allied Arts Guild Auxiliary. Their mission, along with the six other auxiliaries, is to raise funds to support uncompensated care at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.

I was first introduced to the magic of Allied Arts over 20 years ago when a high-tech co-worker organized a tea luncheon for “the girls” at the Guild.  [translation for the guys –lots of lace, tiny crustless sandwiches, and even smaller cookies].   I had no idea that much giggling could be contained in such a small place in Silicon Valley!  I later became a member of an entourage whose tradition was an annual holiday luncheon pilgrimage to  the Guild every year in early December.   I think of this now – in September – because making reservations for this event had to happen early in the Fall.  Securing a reservation for 20 during the Holidays at the Guild is a major competitive event!

Fast forward a few years and a major renovation – Allied Arts remains a landmark on the peninsula.  The Primavera Café now offers a varied menu with salads, sandwiches, and entrees.  The artists in residence range from florists to woodworkers, jewelry makers, architects, interior designers, pottery throwers, and carpet and tapestry specialists.   All in all – some of the best gift shopping in the Bay Area – for a cause!
