Having grown up on both coasts – I learned the three best ways to get seafood from my Dad. First – and most preferred – catch it yourself. Good luck with that in Silicon Valley. Second alternative – go meet the boat and buy fish directly from the folks who caught it. Again – not exactly a feasible errand within the bounds of Silicon Valley itself.
Failing these 2 alternatives – the final solution is to buy seafood from a vendor dedicated to quality and who does such a high volume that you KNOW the fish is fresh. In other words – in Silicon Valley – get your fish from Race Street Fish & Poultry at 253 Race Street in San Jose. This place has been around since 1947 and is still a family-owned and operated business – albeit one that has mushroomed into a sizeable wholesale operation.
Still – the original location on Race Street in San Jose offers a fabulous selection of fish, poultry and meat to its retail clientele. And if you’re in the mood for seafood – but want it now – check out the Race Street Seafood Kitchen at the same location. Originally started as a “fish and chips” shop – this casual restaurant has expanded its menu to include clam chowder, grilled fish selections, and salads. And after more than 60 years – Race Street is still reeling us in for great fish and more!
