Labor Day weekend is just around the corner – marking the transition to our gorgeous Silicon Valley Fall. For the past 47 years, one of THE destinations for Labor Day weekend has been the Kings Mountain Art Fair on Skyline Boulevard in Woodside. Started in 1963 by local homeowners as a fund-raiser to help create a volunteer fire company for the remote Kings Mountain community, the first fair was held in a red barn with mostly local artists and raised $50. The fair has grown over the years, and now has a reputation among artists and fairgoers alike as one of the best art shows on the West Coast.
Set under the redwoods in Woodside, this fair continues to benefit the local volunteer fire brigade and other community activities I love it because it’s a departure from the usual California art and wine festival. I’ll take a glass of wine and a stroll under a cool canopy of redwoods instead of sweltering under the sun on a black top parking lot any day! Well – and I also love any event that advertises that it will have the world’s largest cookies – and explains the best places for “horse parking” in case you decide to ride to the show instead of drive!
