If you’re new to the area – you may notice a lot of “Joe’s” around here – all claiming to be the original. One of Silicon Valley’s beloved institutions is Original Joe’s Restaurant in downtown San Jose. My understanding is that the term “Joe’s” has long been used in the San Francisco Bay Area for an Italian steakhouse with counter seating, lots of leather, a wait staff in tuxedos, and the feeling of an “old school” family restaurant in Chicago or New York. Our Original Joe’s or OJ’s has all this and more.
Come prepared for a wait. If you’re lucky – snag a seat at the bar and order a martini. This is not the place for a girly cocktail like a Lemon Drop or a light beer.
Peruse the menu and plot your order. Give special consideration to the daily specials – they are usually fabulous. And negotiate with your dinner partners. The portions are so large here that you can could easily split an entree and still each go home with a doggy bag!
